Bird Safety in a Built World

When

April 9, 2025
7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

Event Type

Each year more than one billion birds are estimated to collide with buildings, windows, and human-made structures in the United States. Glass windows and nocturnal light pollution are lethal for birds flying through urban and suburban spaces.

The Bird Safe Philly initiative spreads awareness about the issues and mobilizes volunteers to help transfer injured birds to rehab and document avian mortalities in the greater Philadelphia metro area.

Bird Safe Philly serves up bird safety from cafe to classroom. Join us to learn about the success of bird safe retrofitting efforts by Bird Safe Philly in the greater Philadelphia area, from nature centers, to ongoing school efforts, to a popular “green” cafe downtown. We’ll highlight the formation and mission of Bird Safe Philly and early retrofitting work, prioritization of current retrofitting projects, collaborations with sites/partners, installation, and the challenges and lessons learned throughout the process of striving to keep birds safe.

This program is presented by members of the Bird Safe Philly Leadership Team: Stephanie Egger – board member of Liberty Bird Alliance (formerly Wyncote Audubon Society), and biologist at the U.S. Geological Survey Bird Banding Laboratory (BBL) at the Eastern Ecological Science Center in Maryland; Leigh Altadonna – Coordinator of Bird Safe Philly, former President of Wyncote Audubon Society, Bird Town Pennsylvania Board Member and President, and Pennsylvania Audubon Council member; Keith Russell – Program Manager, Urban Conservation, Audubon Mid-Atlantic.

All are welcome – members and non-members – to our program meetings.

This program is presented virtually via Zoom – click here for the Zoom weblink: Meeting Registration – Zoom.
