A colony of Purple Martins has been nesting at the Glen Mills School property for many years, utilizing special mini condominiums built specifically for the birds. These beautiful swallows are declining due to habitat loss and dwindling insects that are essential for survival. Conservation efforts include setting up nestboxes, monitoring, and banding the birds.
On July 8, all are invited to observe and learn about banding the nestlings at Glen Mills, a long-running annual event conducted by federally licensed bird banders. Kids and adults alike will enjoy the incredible experience of seeing birds up-close.
Drive into the school and look for banders at the cluster of white boxes in the main courtyard area. NOTE: Banding may be canceled in case of inclement weather; check this webpage for updates.
