Cardinals flash bright-red feathers flitting through shrubs; jays squawk loudly chasing birds at feeders; hawks circle high in the sky overseeing their territory. Birds are everywhere in the Delaware Valley, from small pocket parks to vast green spaces, in suburban backyards and city lots. More than 400 avian species have been documented in Pennsylvania, including hundreds in the Delaware Valley. Migratory, nesting, and overwintering species occur year-round, sustained by a variety of woodlands, creeks, and meadow habitats. Debbie
Beer, president of the Birding Club of Delaware County (BCDC), will highlight the variety of raptors, woodpeckers, sparrows, and songbirds that live all around us, and the vibrant community of birders dedicated to the discovery, enjoyment, and conservation of our feathered friends.
Debbie Beer has been an avid birder for more than 25 years. She’s traveled to multiple countries and continents for birding, including Africa, India, Ecuador, Brazil, and beyond. John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge in Philadelphia is Debbie’s favorite local patch, where she directs the annual “Big Sit” event, leads monthly bird walks, and advocates for the environmental justice community of Eastwick. Debbie is the current President of the Birding Club of Delaware County (BCDC), and Delaware County coordinator for the 5-year Pennsylvania Bird Atlas 3 initiative. She participates in multiple regional bird conservation initiatives, including annual Christmas Bird Counts, the Philadelphia Breeding Bird Survey, and the Philadelphia Mid-Winter Bird Census.
